X has taken another step toward facilitating in-app financial activity by offering the ability to trade stocks and cryptocurrencies in-stream.

X’s Cashtag Partner Program, which is now live in the U.S., builds on X’s existing cashtag functionality, in order to facilitate trade activity stemming from related discussions in the app.

In April, X launched its updated Cashtags option, which links embedded market info to stock codes listings.

The Cashtag Partner Program expands on this. Users can now tap through from these listings to buy or trade stocks by accessing their account on partner trading platforms.

As explained by X: “At launch, X users can tap through Cashtags to brokerage partners, including Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken and Coinbase.”

That will more directly connect X activity to market actions, which could be a valuable complement for those seeking to take action on the latest news and updates.

As noted, it’s another step towards fulfilling X owner Elon Musk’s “everything app” vision, in which X users will eventually be able to undertake all forms of financial activity in the app.

X already facilitates payments in the U.S., which is the entry point for finance, so stock trading adds another consideration.

Musk’s hope is that, eventually, X will replace banks as users’ key financial partner, though whether people will actually trust X to do this remains to be seen.
