Per Vince Mercogliano on The Athletic Hockey Show, it looks like the Rangers had some decent offers for Vincent Trocheck last season, but the offers “didn’t meet what Chris Drury was looking for.” The trade deadline offers for Trocheck were rumored to be more for futures than immediate help, something Drury wasn’t open to as it didn’t fit the retool model. Trocheck was eventually traded to Utah for defenseman Sean Durzi, center prospect Cole Beaudoin, and a 2027 third round pick this past summer.
One of the more public trade deadline offers for Trocheck was from Minnesota, though we never got confirmed pieces in that offer. Charlie Stramel and a 1st round pick was the rumor, plus another piece. The Rangers were holding out for Danila Yurov, and naturally nothing came to be. It is worth this is a rumor, and nothing was confirmed. It is unknown what other trade deadline offers for Trocheck were out there.
This news can be taken in one of two ways. The first is that Drury knew what he wanted and held out for it. Durzi is a top four defenseman and Beaudoin is a legitimate prospect who is already the best center in the Rangers farm system.
The other way is that Drury lacked creativity to take the best value of all these trade deadline offers for Trocheck, even if they included futures, and then flip those pieces for what he wanted to move the roster forward. The Blueshirts gave up 3 first round picks this past offseason, and having an extra one in the bank could have certainly helped the future outlook. Perhaps this approach even gives the Rangers a young NHL center they so desperately need.
I don’t think there’s a right vs. wrong for this, but Drury also has no trust from anyone in the fan base. Sometimes the reputation you have is earned.
