Former top 10 player Stefanos Tsitsipas will face Matteo Arnaldi in the second round of the French Open 2026.
Tsitsipas was up against Alexandre Muller in the first round. Tsitsipas went down a break to start the match but recovered pretty quickly. After conceding the first couple of games, he swept the next six games to take the opening set. He raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set when Muller threw in the towel. The latter was unable to continue due to an injury, thus sending Tsitsipas into the next round.

Tsitsipas didn’t get an opportunity to test himself against Muller, who injured himself and ultimately retired. He notched up his sixth win on clay this year in the process, and improved his record at the French Open to 28-9 in the win. He finished as the runner-up to Novak Djokovic in 2021, his best result in Paris.
Arnaldi fought back to oust Griekspoor in his opener here. It marked his third win of the season at the ATP level, all on clay as well, and second against a top 40 player. A fourth-round finish in 2024 remains his best result at the French Open, coincidentally going down against Tsitsipas back then.
However, Tsitsipas has struggled this year, even on clay, his preferred surface. He has won back-to-back matches on the red dirt only once this year, en route to the fourth round of the Madrid Open. However, Arnaldi finds himself in the same boat, winning consecutive matches only once so far. Tsitsipas has been in slightly better form, and his record in Paris speaks for itself.
