Rangers re-sign Ryan Lindgren to 1 year contract

The NY Rangers have re-signed defenseman Ryan Lindgren to a one year contract, per Elliotte Friedman. Lindgren and the Rangers seemed somewhat close over the past few weeks, with term being the main issue for both sides. The Rangers wanted to keep things short, with Lindgren looking for more stability. In the end, the Rangers got their term, but Lindgren got a bit more money upfront with a $4.5 million cap hit.

The Rangers mitigate the injury risk with Lindgren’s short term deal, but now deal with the risk that his subpar season last year was a blip and not a trend as he hits unrestricted free agency at 27 years old. But as stated this morning, sometimes it’s better to cut a player loose a year too early as opposed to a year too late.

Lindgren’s $4.5 million cap hit leaves the Rangers with–assuming 13 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 2 goalies–about $1.5 million in cap space.

Related, this now opens a 48 hour buyout window for any player making over $4 million. The thought is Jacob Trouba, but that’s highly unlikely.
