Rangers claim Arthur Kaliyev off waivers

The New York Rangers have claimed forward Arthur Kaliyev off waivers from the LA Kings. Kaliyev was waived yesterday by the Kings after several tumultuous years with the organization, eerily similar to Kaapo Kakko‘s days with the Rangers. Kaliyev, a 2019 2nd round pick, has averaged roughly 1.3 points/60 at 5v5 with LA, but was unable to secure a steady spot in the lineup. He has not played a game with the Kings this season.

Kaliyev’s metrics are stellar, limited only by poor on-ice shooting. This comes mostly from his spot in the lineup, playing mostly fourth line minutes with linemates that, to be nice, lack skill. His metrics warrant a shot in the top-nine as an absolute play driver.

If Chris Kreider is out long term, he’d be worth a look with Reilly Smith and Mika Zibanejad. If not, then he’d be worth a look in place of Smith on that line. Metrics may or may not carry over, but he’s been far better than the Kings gave him credit for.

Matt Rempe was returned to Hartford to clear roster space. Chris Kreider was not added to IR.

Claiming Kaliyev off waivers may work out. It may not. But at least the Rangers tried it. Small victories, I suppose.
