In an attempt to find more balance in the bottom six, aside from moving Will Cuylle to center and Noah Laba to the fourth line, the New York Rangers have swapped fourth line wingers. Jaro Chmelar has been recalled, with the Blueshirts reassigning winger Taylor Raddysh to the AHl to make roster space. Chmelar was reassigned to Hartford two weeks ago after struggling to start the season, with Raddysh being recalled in the same move. Now, of course, the two have flipped as Raddysh has been rather vanilla and Chmelar put up two goals and two assists in 7 AHL games.
Recalling Jaro Chmelar and reassigning Taylor Raddysh may seem like reshuffling chairs on the Titanic, but Chmelar’s style of play is a much better fit for how Mike Sullivan wants the Rangers to play. He’s an aggressive and effective forechecker, which at least helps add some level of identity to the fourth line. Chmelar and Laba are two-thirds of what could be a decent shutdown line, though the Rangers would need a defensive upgrade on Matt Rempe and Luke Glendening for that to be a true shutdown line.
