Instagram has shared some tips on how to make engaging, resonant video content, based on insights from a range of creator consultants.
The notes relate specifically to video editing, and how creators have used Meta’s Edits app to improve their content approaches.
As explained by Instagram: “The creators who consistently make great content aren’t doing anything magical. They’ve just found a process that works, and they stick with it. Their editing choices are intentional, their workflows are efficient and they’re always learning from what the data tells them.”
Based on feedback from these creators, Instagram shared a five-step workflow to ensure all the key elements of effective video creation are being addressed.
1. Start with the hook
Instagram said that the first few seconds of a video “decide everything,” and creators need to consider how they can grab attention with their content.
“The creators we talked to open with the moment that makes someone stop scrolling,” Instagram said. “A bold statement. A surprising visual. A question that demands an answer. They build the edit around that opening, trimming anything that slows down the start.”
That initial hook is key to maximizing audience response, and Instagram said that creators should spend a significant amount of their editing time getting that initial opening just right.
Instagram added that creators can use the skip rate metric to measure their performance on this aspect.
2. Edit to the rhythm of the audio
Instagram said great video editing means cutting on the beat, and matching transitions to the energy of the track.
“A well-timed cut synced to a beat drop keeps people watching,” the app said.
Creators can use beat markers in Edits to identify when the beats land, then trim and cut their clips to the rhythm
Instagram also said creators can use trending audio to maximize response.
3. Use text and visuals to reinforce the message
Edits offers a range of visual effects and presentation options, and these also help to grab attention and get people watching.
Instagram said that on-screen text can highlight key points and maximize viewership in sound-off environments. In addition, using graphics, stickers or subtle effects at the right moments can add emphasis without clutter.
“The goal is clarity: every visual element should help the viewer understand and stay with the content,” Instagram said.
4. Close the feedback loop with data
Instagram said that creators should monitor their insights data to measure what’s working, and address what’s not.
“If viewers are dropping off at the 4-second mark, the hook needs work,” Instagram said. “If saves are high but shares are low, the content might be valuable but not shareable enough. This data informs the next edit and every video is a learning opportunity.”
5. Keep workflow tight
Finally, Instagram said that creators need to maximize their time. Edits can help uncover key trends and opportunities and cut down on manual research work.
“Browse the Inspiration tab for trending formats, use templates to jump-start creation, post directly from the app and check Insights to see what’s working,” Instagram said.
These are some solid tips for video creation, which could help to provide more guidance on best practice approaches to Reels creation.
