Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, also known as “HasanAbi,” has responded to criticism for wearing a Mao Zedong-inspired outfit by accusing people of being Sinophobic. During a livestream on August 15, 2026, HasanAbi reacted to his interview with Astead Herndon of Vox.
At one point, Astead Herndon brought up the Turkish-American personality’s appearance at the College Democrats of America convention in July 2026. He also mentioned Hasan wearing an “outfit reminiscent” of the former Chinese communist dictator, which eventually stirred controversy.
While watching his interview with Vox, HasanAbi stated that he is “going to keep wearing” the Mao Zedong-inspired outfit, adding that he “really likes it,” and that it has a “special significance” for him:
“I love that suit, and I am going to keep wearing it, too. I am not going to stop wearing the suit, just for the record. I just wear it to, like, special events. Right? I really like it. It has a special significance for me. It’s a reminder of my trip to China, which I, you know, enjoyed. It’s a great suit, and I look good! You know?”
Hasan then stated that he “did not care” about people being Sinophobic by criticizing his outfit:
“I look good in it. I’m not going to stop wearing it. I don’t care if people take it in a very, like, I would go so far as to say in a Sinophobic direction.”
HasanAbi calls Mao Zedong “one of the greatest leaders of this world”
On July 20, 2026, a 36-second video from HasanAbi’s Just Chatting livestream garnered significant traction on X, in which he described Mao Zedong as “one of the greatest leaders of this world.”
Expressing his belief that the former Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party “changed the entire universe,” the Twitch political commentator stated:
“I got stopped by a cop, who thought I was, like, making fun of Mao Zedong, which I never would and never will! Mao Zedong is one of the great leaders of this world. Okay? A man who changed the entire universe, the entire planet… okay? ‘For real. For real.’ Yes! I mean, there were a lot of ******* excesses, let’s be real, but the People’s Republic of China would not exist without Mao Zedong.”
HasanAbi recently made headlines after he confirmed that he was taking legal action against Scott Jennings.
