Fans praise Rob Pelinka after latest Mark Williams injury report puts Suns center on spotlight

After acquiring Luka Doncic in February 2025, Rob Pelinka traded for Mark Williams before rescinding the offer to the Charlotte Hornets. Williams was later acquired by the Phoenix Suns, but his recent injury has LA Lakers fans singing praise for their general manager.

According to NBA insider Evan Sidery, Williams is in danger of missing the Suns’ entire first-round series against the OKC Thunder. The big man has left foot soreness after suffering a stress reaction last month. He has had foot issues since entering the NBA back in 2022.

Williams was acquired by the Suns last summer, and he was able to stay relatively healthy before his current injury. He played 60 games and averaged 11.7 points and 8.0 rebounds in just 23.6 minutes per game.

The news of Mark Williams‘ injury had LA Lakers fans praising Rob Pelinka for backing out of their trade with the Charlotte Hornets last year. The Lakers were ready to send Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, an unprotected first-round pick and a first-round pick swap before rescinding their offer after Williams failed a medical.

Here are some of the reactions on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Lakers dodged a bullet with this guy,” a fan wrote.

“Everyone say, ‘Thank you, Rob,'” one fan remarked.

“Between this and getting Luke Kennard for the plague that was Gabe Vincent….. I believe its time for the majority of Lakernation to sign the apology form,” another fan suggested.

“Huh? So Pelinka was right? His bones are really made of used condoms,” a fan joked.

“Imagine being so injury prone, a team wasnt even willing to give up Dalton Knecht for you,” one fan commented.

“Pelinka was right. The physical was right,” another fan tweeted.

While the LA Lakers seemingly dodged a bullet in Mark Williams, the Phoenix Suns have a decision to make this offseason. Williams is a restricted free agent, and the Suns have a young Khaman Maluach waiting for his opportunity.

Mark Williams listed as questionable for Game 2

The Phoenix Suns are set to battle the defending NBA champions, the OKC Thunder, on Wednesday for Game 2 of their first-round series. The Suns were no match against the Thunder in Game 1, but they will look to change their fortunes in Game 2.

Mark Williams is questionable due to left foot soreness. He’ll be evaluated before the game and will either get upgraded to available or downgraded to out.
