The third round of men’s singles along with the fourth round of women’s singles will take centrestage on Day 8 (Monday, May 11) of the Italian Open 2026. The exits of World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and 24-time Major champion Novak Djokovic have been the most notable upsets so far.
Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Daniil Medvedev, and Elena Rybakina are some of the high-profile stars in the fray on Monday. Here’s a quick look at the predictions for all the matches set for Day 8 of the Italian Open:
Thanks for the submission!
#1. Jannik Sinner vs Alexei Popyrin
Sinner beat Sebastian Ofner 6-3, 6-4 in the second round, while Popyrin upset 26th seed Jakub Mensik 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The latter improved his record for the season to 5-11.
Sinner, on the other hand, won his 24th match in a row. He’s seeking to complete the Career Golden Masters by winning the Italian Open, the only Masters 1000 title missing from his collection. He leads Popyrin 2-1 in their head-to-head, and beat him at the Qatar Open earlier this year. Given his current form, a loss would be quite surprising.
Winner: Jannik Sinner
#2. Mirra Andreeva vs Elise Mertens

Andreeva fought past Viktorija Golubic in three sets in the third round, while Mertens needed three sets to eliminate defending champion Jasmine Paolini as well. This will be the first meeting between them.
Andreeva has been in great form over the past few weeks. She won the Linz Open, made the semifinals in Stuttgart, and the finals in singles and doubles at the Madrid Open. Mertens, meanwhile, has reached the fourth round of a WTA 1000 event for the first time since last year’s Italian Open. Based on their recent results, the teenager will be the firm favorite to win.
Winner: Mirra Andreeva
#3. Elina Svitolina vs Nikola Bartunkova
Svitolina crushed Hailey Baptiste 6-1, 6-2 in the previous round, while lucky loser Bartunkova required three sets to oust Madison Keys. This will be the first meeting between the pair.
Bartunkova has made the most of her second chance, reaching the fourth round of a WTA 1000 tournament on her main draw debut. Svitolina has won the Italian Open twice in the past and has a 22-9 record at the tournament. While Bartunkova is a promising young talent, Svitolina‘s experience and record in Rome makes her the easy pick to win this match.
Winner: Elina Svitolina
#4. Daniil Medvedev vs Pablo Llamas Ruiz

Medvedev has reached the third round of the Italian Open without playing a match. He received a first-round bye, and a walkover from Tomas Machac in the second round sent him into the next round.
Llamas Ruiz came through the qualifying rounds, and then scored wins over Ethan Quinn and 28th seed Corentin Moutet to reach the third round of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time. This will be his first meeting against Medvedev. The latter won his only title on clay at the Italian Open. Despite his struggles on the surface, he will be expected to beat the Spaniard.
