Atletico Madrid are allegedly willing to accept Viktor Gyokeres in a potential deal to sell Julian Alvarez, whose only preferred destination is Barcelona, to Arsenal in the summer window.
Over the last two months, Alvarez has proved to be a big point of contention as the Argentine is reportedly very keen to join Barcelona. However, his current club have been firm on their stance of not parting ways with the striker.
Thanks for the submission!
But, according to Mundo Deportivo, Atletico Madrid are currently open to offloading their star this summer, with the 26-year-old’s situation deemed untenable now. The Diego Simeone-coached outfit, however, are only interested in negotiating with the Gunners, not their La Liga rivals.
Since Atletico Madrid have little time to rope in a replacement for Alvarez, they are open to including Gyokeres in a player-plus-cash deal. But, Alvarez is not keen to join Arsenal as he does not want to return to the Premier League following his two-year stint at Manchester City.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner, who has even allegedly received a personal call from Mikel Arteta, is only interested in joining Barcelona this month. His stance has stalled talks between his current team and the Gunners.
Emmanuel Petit predicts Arsenal’s Premier League home clash against Coventry City
Ex-Arsenal ace Emmanuel Petit has predicted that his former club will not have an easy time against Coventry City in the 2026-27 Premier League opener this Friday. The Frenchman told Grosvenor Sport (h/t Metro):
“Playing the opening game against a promoted team is never easy because you might not have your rhythm yet and they will be so determined to have a positive start. Having said that, the spine of this Arsenal team has been the same for years and they understand each other very well.”
Petit, who also represented Chelsea and Barcelona, concluded:
“We all know the reality for promoted teams. It is quite difficult to survive that first year, and so many promoted clubs have been yo-yoing between divisions for years. It would be a gamble for Frank Lampard and Coventry. Playing against the champions is a huge challenge. If Arsenal play with that same attitude, it will be really, really difficult for Coventry.”
The Gunners beat Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield clash last Sunday and will hope to continue their good start to the term. Coventry, on the other hand, last faced the London side in 2014, losing 4-0 in the FA Cup.
