The first dominos of the trade deadline have fallen. The Rangers have traded Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey to the Colorado Avalanche for Juuso Parssinen, Calvin de Haan, a 2nd round pick, and a 4th round pick. The Rangers will retain 50% of Ryan Lindgren’s contract. With the trade, the Rangers have solidified themselves as sellers at the deadline, despite there still being a possibility of buying some younger assets later on.
Lindgren is the big piece of the trade, and his departure marks the end of a tumultuous final two seasons with the Rangers. It was clear from the start the Rangers were going to trade Lindgren after only giving him a one year contract this summer. His play had declined under Peter Laviolette and his injuries were starting to catch up to him. Hopefully he plays better in Colorado in a less aggressive defensive zone system.
Juuso Parssinen, a 24 year old center and former 7th round pick of Nashville, has skated in 37 games between the Predators and Avalanche, putting up a line of 4-7-11. He’s a bottom-six plug at a position of need and a pending restricted free agent. He could be solid depth for the Blueshirts.
de Haan, a known name, is a pending unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and was likely included for cap and roster purposes.
The picks are the better of the two between Colorado and Carolina (2nd round) and the better of the two between Colorado and Vancouver (4th round). The picks are the real prize in the trade, with Parssinen perhaps having some depth value.
