Affordable Counseling & Therapy in Austin

(Click here to update or add your listing info)

Finding affordable counseling in any city can be a challenge but we are hoping we can make this a bit easier for you with some well-researched options in Austin. This is a comprehensive guide that was put together with the input of over 2,000 therapists in Austin. If you’re looking for a “therapist near me” or even “family counseling near me“, use this guide to help you find the right counselor for your unique needs.

In Network and Out of Network: First off, if you have insurance, I strongly suggest you check your benefits to see what your in and out of network options are. In-network options are providers who have a contracted rate with insurance companies and most often this is lower than the cash pay rate. The issue with this tends to be that insurance companies squeeze therapists on the reimbursement rates and frequently therapists will leave their panel or greatly limit the number of insurance clients they take. This is a frequent point of frustration for people. Out of network allows you to see whomever you would like and you pay their full rate but then your insurance will kick in once you have met your deductible.

  • One quick note for those looking for affordable counseling… If you are looking for help. Depending on the nature of the issue, it may take some time to treat it. This may mean a few months of coming weekly or it may take longer. Be prepared for this as counseling isn’t something where a therapist comes in and waves a magic wand.
  • More experienced and specialized therapists tend to charge more for their expertise.
  • Double check with your EAP about support options if you have it as it may be free.

Agencies and Nonprofits: This is where a number of therapists start out and learn how to be therapists. They are very affordable and accessible but the demand for services far outweighs their ability to serve. Wait times can be extremely extended. Also, therapists might be telehealth is small towns all over Texas. This may not matter to you but if you are wanting in-person, this may be more difficult to accomplish. You also are not likely to have a choice of the therapist that you work with. It’s more likely you will be assigned to someone who has availability.

Affordable counseling in Austin: Options in this vary from free to $100 per session depending on where you go. This is largely determined by the number of years of experience the therapists have and whether they work at a non-profit that may also have grant funding.

Directory resources to consider (credit to ATX-Therapist)

PSYCHOLOGY TODAY

This is the most well-known option, so it’s probably the most comprehensive database of Austin therapists.

INCLUSIVE THERAPISTS

National therapist directory of therapists who are committed to offering culturally-responsive therapy that acknowledges the intersection between mental health issues and systemic inequality (an area that psychology today has received criticism for). More specifically geared towards people of color, LGBTQ-identifying folks, people with disabilities, and/or those who identify as a part of other marginalized groups.

MENTAL HEALTH MATCH

MHM allows you to fill out more specific demographic information about yourself, the types of issues you’re seeking support with, and what type of therapist you’re looking for. It has more specific search filters than other directories (ie- you can search for things like atheist non-binary therapists under age 35, or white Christian male therapists over 45). It’s best feature IMO is that it allows you to filter by the price you’re able to pay per session for therapy. This is a new (to me) directory so honestly I have no idea how well it works in practice, but in theory it seems promising.

THERAPY DEN

Nothing much to add, another directory that serves as an alternative to psych today.

CULTURALLY-SPECIFIC DIRECTORIES:

LATINXTHERAPISTS
