Abolitionist Levi Coffin: Action, Not Words

Levi Coffin was a legendary figure in the abolition movement who believed that action was more important than words in that struggle. Born in New Garden, North Carolina, on October 28, 1798, Coffin was raised in an anti-slavery Quaker family who immigrated to Indiana near the border with Ohio in 1826 to avoid slaveholders’ increasing persecution of Quakers.

Coffin grew wealthy from his various businesses assisting neighbors and travelers in the important transit corridor.
