While they were not universally loved, the Redmi Note 15 series from Xiaomi got a positive response in a poll a year ago. The Pro+ model was clearly the fan favorite, but the Pro did well for itself too. Last week we polled your opinion on their successors – and the results aren’t nearly as good.
To summarize the results, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max is overpriced. The regular 17 Pro is also overpriced – and people would rather have the Pro Max, anyway.
Sticking to the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max for now, it found some fans, but most would-be buyers are put off by the price. The price hike from the Note 15 generation certainly pushed some people away. We’ll be keeping an eye on the new models in our weekly deals posts.
Until discounts hit, however, most people looking for a mid-range phone are looking elsewhere. The bigger battery (9,210mAh in Europe and 10,000mAh in India) is cool, but it’s not enough to offset the loss of the 200MP camera. The boring choice of chipset didn’t help either – a Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 in a €600 / £430 phone, really? If you’re not getting a 200MP camera, why not get a Poco phone?
The Redmi Note 17 Pro fared even worse – a price cut will help its popularity, but if the Pro Max gets a similar discount, then the 17 Pro will struggle to get into the spotlight again.
The Pro has an even more boring chipset (Snapdragon 6s Gen 4). Either way, both phones are limited to UFS 3.1 transfer speeds – unless you get a cheap 128GB model, at which point you are looking at UFS 2.2.
Another memory-related complaint that we saw in the comments was about the RAM. In Europe, the Pro Max offers a choice between 256GB or 512GB storage, but RAM is fixed at 8GB. In Germany, the 512GB model is a free upgrade right now (but it still costs €600), while in the UK, the 8/256GB is £430 and the 8/512GB one is £480.
The 17 Pro has it worse – the base 256GB model has only 6GB of RAM. 6GB of RAM on a €400 / £360 phone in 2026? “No, thanks,” said many voters. The 512GB version does have 8GB of RAM, but it’s a €50 / £40 upgrade.
Shoppers in India at least get a 12GB option for the Pro Max. Except there you can’t have a 512GB phone – it’s either ₹50,000 for an 8/256GB unit or ₹56,000 for a 12/256GB unit. As for the Redmi Note 17 Pro, all Indian units come with 8GB of RAM at the expense of storage – you can pick 128GB for ₹37,000 or 256GB for ₹40,000. There’s no 512GB option for this one either.
We get it, memory is ridiculously expensive these days – but people don’t like going backwards. And save for the larger batteries, the Redmi Note 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max feel like a step (or two) backwards from the 15 Pro and 15 Pro+.
