Chris Kreider isn’t coming back to the New York Rangers. Now a free agent after a mutual contract termination with the Anaheim Ducks, Kreider wants to come back East to be closer to family. One year after the trade that sent the longest tenured Ranger at the time and perhaps the best clutch goal scorer in Rangers history to Anaheim for Carey Terrance and a 3rd round pick, Kreider is coming back East. But it won’t be to the Rangers. Chris Kreider isn’t coming back, and there is nothing we can do about it.
Make no mistake, I’d love it for Kreider to return and retire as a Ranger. But it simply won’t happen. Kreider returning to the Rangers doesn’t fit the direction of the team right now, nor do the Blueshirts have LW spots available with Alexis Lafreniere, Pavel Dorofeyev, and Will Cuylle. It’s also safe to say that as long as Chris Drury remains in charge of the Rangers, Chris Kreider isn’t coming back. Perhaps that’s making something of nothing, but it wasn’t hard to read between the lines of the drama the last few seasons.
Chris Kreider deserved to retire a Ranger, have his number retired, and break many Rangers records. Instead, we will probably watch him in a Boston Bruins uniform to close out his career. It’s such a shame, too.
