“Costumes can get expensive fast!” Naomi notes. “When planning, set a limit on how much you want to spend on your costume. It’s OK to be creative with constraints. Look around your house or ask friends if they have any items that would work.”

Naomi adds this tip: “Some of the best costumes can be made from painted cardboard or T-shirts. Even some simple accessories can go a long way. One year, my team and I dressed up as Starbucks baristas—we just wore white shirts, jeans, and green aprons!”

When planning your costume, Naomi advises picking something students will recognize. “This can be the most fun part! Pick a book you’ve read as a grade level, something from what you’re learning in class, or even a popular movie. Having a costume kids recognize makes dressing up so much fun (and maybe adds a few more ‘cool’ points under your belt).”

One caveat: “Stick to school-friendly themes,” Naomi stresses. “Anything that you wouldn’t want hanging on the wall of your classroom most likely won’t work for school. Choose outfit pieces that you can still move around and teach in comfortably, just like your teacher outfits.”
