The Rangers have signed forward Eeli Tolvanen to a 1 year, $1.5 million contract. The 27 year old forward scored 12 goals and 36 points in 78 games last season with Seattle, which was actually 7th on the offensively inept Kraken last season. Tolvanen is an interesting signing, as the talent is clearly there but he’s been on offensively challenged teams his entire career. Drafted 30th overall in 2017, some Ranger fans were hoping the Blueshirts would take him at 21st overall, but opted to go with Filip Chytil instead.
Eeli Tolvanen is a middle six forward at the moment, but as mentioned he has the skill to play up in the lineup. Tolvanen is likely insurance on a few players, notably Oliver Bjorkstrand, Tye Kartye, and Adam Sykora. None of the three are guarantees at this point in the offseason, and the Rangers are hoping for all three to either rebound (Bjorkstrand) or continue their solid starts with the Rangers (Kartye, Sykora). If any of the three falter, Tolvanen can probably take over their roles.
Signing Eeli Tolvanen likely means Taylor Raddysh is on the outside looking in this season, though he’s also secondary insurance on the bottom six kids.
