The Shards season 1 episode 3 reveals what happens to Really Rhonda (Ivy Wolk) after the Trawler abducts her from a deserted roller-skating rink. Police find blood and signs of a struggle at the location, but Rhonda is already being held captive in a basement. The Trawler keeps her inside a cage and forces her to eat live eels while she calls for help. Later, the Trawler removes Rhonda from the cage as she continues to resist.
Meanwhile, Bret investigates Robert after becoming convinced that he could be the Trawler. His search leads him to Robert’s house, where he finds an empty cage, a bloody school jacket, and an iguana, but the episode does not confirm Robert’s involvement in Rhonda’s kidnapping.
The Shards season 1 episode 3 recap: Who is Rhonda?

After Rhonda visits the desolate disco roller derby, she becomes the latest victim of the Trawler in The Shards season 1 episode 3. Blood and evidence of a scuffle are discovered at the scene later on, but Rhonda remains missing.
Subsequently, Rhonda is shown to be confined to a basement cage by the Trawler in the episode. As she cries out for rescue, her captor tells her to consume live eels. The Trawler finally frees Rhonda from her cage when she continues to fight.
As Rhonda vanishes, the disparity between the kids’ public and private reactions becomes clear. With the help of Rhonda’s father’s business, Susan and Robert set up a rescue fund. They urge pupils to come forward with information regarding Rhonda’s disappearance and hand out water bottles with her image on them.
Matt vanished earlier, and Bret is still irritated that the group doesn’t seem to care about him. Debbie harbors ambitions of stardom, while Susan attends to Robert’s party and prepares for her homecoming. Bret is already suspicious of the group after their reaction, and he decides to look into the disappearances on his own.
The episode also shows how Bret is personally involved with Rhonda. She doesn’t seem to care about other people’s opinions and speaks her mind, which he finds admirable. Thus, Rhonda is the only member of his social circle whose disappearance deeply affects him.
Why does Bret suspect Robert is the Trawler?
Robert starts to pique Bret’s interest as a possible link to the disappearances in The Shards season 1 episode 3. As Robert leaves with a bag in tow, he follows him to the family’s rented home. Although the contents of Robert’s bag remain a mystery throughout the episode, Bret informs the police that he thought the bag might have a human head.
As soon as Robert departs, Bret goes inside the house and checks it out. Upon reaching the basement, he notices an unlocked cage and what seems to be Matt’s school jacket. Underneath the bloody jacket, he finds an iguana.
Although the results do not prove Robert’s guilt in the disappearances, they do lend credence to Bret’s suspicions. Someone may have been detained there in the empty cage, and the school jacket could link the place to Matt. Having said that, Robert abducting Matt or Rhonda is not shown in the episode.
While Bret is in the basement looking for something, the scene changes to Rhonda being held somewhere else. Although this proves that the Trawler keeps victims in cages, it does not prove that Robert is the one who held Rhonda captive.
Bret’s position as a writer also influences how he understands the information. He weaves occurrences into the plot he is crafting, frequently narrating them from his own point of view. His fourth-wall breaking in The Shards season 1 episode 3 serves to further demonstrate his command over the audience’s perception of events.
What does Bret find inside Robert’s house?
It is not established in The Shards season 1 episode 3 that Robert is the Trawler. Once Bret has trailed Robert to his house, he goes inside and checks the basement. After discovering the iguana, he comes across an empty cage and what seems to be Matt’s school jacket. While these findings raise the possibility of a link to the disappearances, they do not prove that Robert was involved.
Additionally, the episode shifts between Bret’s quest and Rhonda’s shackling, revealing that the Trawler is retaining her in another location. At a later time, while Bret is in Matt’s house, the Trawler silently calls him. The unknown caller does not identify themselves and merely speaks while breathing.
The fact that Bret is also a writer and narrator means that these roles influence his investigation. Throughout the episode, his obsession with Joan Didion and narrative remains a constant, and his previous interaction with Terry continues to shape his perspective on loss and the world around him.
Robert is still under investigation as of the conclusion of The Shards season 1 episode 3, although the evidence is still not conclusive. Bret keeps looking for Matt and Rhonda, but the episode doesn’t settle who the Trawler is.
