“Thank god they didn’t watch Chernobyl”

Ryan Reynolds reacted to a Texas couple’s decision to shift to Wrexham after watching Reynolds’ ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ series, an Emmy Award-winning sports documentary.

The 2022 documentary comprising five seasons tracks Reynolds and Rob McElhenney after their joint purchase of Wrexham AFC, the third-oldest football club in the world, based in a working-class town in Wales.

Welcome to Wrexham not only explores the club’s rise from the English lower divisions to the Championship but also covers the town’s residents and the fans and what the club means to them.

Responding to BBC News’ tweet about a Texas couple moving from Texas to Wrexham on seeing the “Welcome to Wrexham” series, Reynolds wrote:

“Thank god they didn’t watch Chernobyl.”

The Chernobyl series Reynolds talked about is another critically acclaimed series based on the events surrounding the nuclear accident in the town of Cherynobyl in 1986, located in modern-day Russia. While the background radiation has seemingly dropped to safe levels for short-term stays, it’s not advisable to visit currently due to Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Going back to Wrexham AFC, co-owned by Reynolds and McElhenney in February 2021, the Red Dragons missed out on a shot at the Championship playoffs last season, finishing two points behind sixth-placed Hull City, who won the play-offs to qualify for the Premier League.

How have Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham fared in pre-season?

Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham have had a mixed pre-season as they prepare for the 2026-27 Championship season. The Welsh side drew goalless with Wisła Krakow on July 11.

They then beat Manchester United 1-0 in Helsinki seven days later, with Sam Smith scoring the game’s only goal six minutes before the break. The Red Dragons continued their winning run with a 3-2 victory over Leeds United.

Smith was among the scorers, as were Kieffer Moore – who had broken the deadlock inside the opening minute – and Bailey Cadamarteri. However, the Championship side lost their next two friendlies, going down 1-0 to Liverpool in New York and Sunderland in Philadelphia.

Ryan Reynolds’ co-owned side begin their season against Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup first round on August 7 before they commence their Championship campaign at Cardiff City 10 days later.
