
Alice Mabel Allen (1886-1976) grew up in the village of Adams in Jefferson County. In 1908, while attending Syracuse University, Mabel, as she was known, kept a diary which New York Almanack is publishing each week. She is now back in Adams for summer break.
Monday, June 22
Went down to [newspaper] office and finished sorting the Annuals. In the afternoon Alice and I went out on silver com[mittee] for Alumni banquet. After supper I saw Georgia. Went to a meeting of the decorating com. at Ned Clark’s, then went to Caine’s with Alice and down to Mrs. Landon’s. Thunder shower in evening.
Tuesday, June 23
Worked at office writing Baccalaureate sermon and local. Mr. Hutchins, mother’s Eastern Star friend, called. Went out with Alice to gather up silver but as she had a hard headache Jessie took her place. It began to rain and mother took her place afterwards. In evening I went to the Class exercises with mother and afterwards with Alice to a surprise party for Allen Grimshaw.
Wednesday, June 24
Finished collecting the silver and then worked until noon on the silver and decorating committees. Went at 2 and worked until almost 6 this afternoon. The banquet was an entire success and toasts were good. I sat with Bina, Louise and Jessie. Wore my pink organdy, low neck. Was elected treasurer for next year. Picked up silver afterwards. Came home with Alice and Bert.
Thursday, June 25
Harry Cowles phoned for me to go to the dance just as Harold came. Went to Masonic Temple to arrange silver, but Alice had to leave early on account of company. Went down after dinner and finished and mother came down with the horse. Alice and I drove ‘round and took back the things, staying out until almost 6. Took Louise home. Father went to Niagara Falls on Editorial Association. After supper went with Zoe to look at present for Georgia. Went to dance with Harold Spicer.
Friday, June 26
Lost post office key. Went to office afternoon and morning letters from Melvin [brother-in-law] telling of Dora’s operation and that their trip east would be delayed three weeks. To-night Georgia and Edith stopped for me to go up to Mrs. Lawson’s to a parlor entertainment given by her and Miss Kellogg. Miss Oakes of Watertown recited. Jessie sang. Afterwards Louise, Edith and I walked down with Jessie and Bina while they opened their house. Their parents were away.
Saturday, June 27
Post card from Father. This noon at 1:30 Alma gave a luncheon for Georgia. Alma finally had to go for her after we had waited and waited, as she thot it was a dinner at night. Left early to go down to office. Saw Rollin T. [a suitor] a few minutes. Dr. Walrath took Edna [her sister], Louise, Edith, Kellogg and me automobiling down Henderson State road. Afterwards Edith and I went down to see Zoe about crepe hats for wedding.
Sunday, June 28
Father came back this morning. Alma and I went to see Hattie Nott off. She goes to Hart [?] for her new home. Edna and I went to church alone and I staid to Sunday School. Talked about S.S. picnic. After dinner Rollin T. came over and later Edna made some fudge and I cracked the nuts. Went to Junior but there were not enough for a meeting. Played in C.C. Went down to say good-bye to Martha Poor’s sisters. Stopped for Louise at Jessie’s. Rollin went with us on way home. Walked down to telephone office with him.
