Former NHLer and TSN analyst Jeff O’Neill didn’t hold back while discussing Buffalo Sabres forward Beck Malenstyn’s crash into Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes during Game 3 on Sunday.
In the second period, Malenstyn drove hard to the net on a forecheck. Canadiens defenseman Zac Bolduc pushed him from behind, but Malenstyn continued full speed into the crease and collided with Dobes, knocking the goalie down and sparking a big scrum.
Dobes was shaken up but stayed in the game and was not injured. O’Neill was vocal about the play, calling it malicious and arguing that Malenstyn should have received supplemental discipline.
“I’ll tell you what, I don’t know how at the end of the game that Malenstyn running over that goaltender… I thought that was deliberate. I heard—I think it was Dreger saying—he might have tried to go up and over. I thought he tried to run the goaltender, and for him to only get two minutes? I’m sorry, Sabres fans. I thought this was a five-minute major to some degree where he should have been thrown out of the hockey game,” O’Neill said.
He added:
“I like tough hockey. I like the stuff after the whistle, but I thought he could have really injured the goalie there. I thought that was malicious and I thought it deserved more than two minutes. I don’t know what you guys thought of it.”
The next day, the NHL Department of Player Safety fined Beck Malenstyn $3,515.63 under the CBA. Malentsyn only received a two-minute minor for goaltender interference.
Former NHLer believes it was an “intentional run” by Beck Malenstyn on Jakub Dobes
Former NHL defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo shared his thoughts about Beck Malenstyn’s play against Jakub Dobes, calling it an “intentional run” by the Sabres forward:
“That’s an intentional run of the goalie. Didn’t even attempt to slow down. Should’ve been more than 2 min. Thankfully Dobes is ok,” Colaiacovo posted on X.
The Montreal Canadiens, meanwhile, defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-2 in Game 4 at Centre Bell Arena. The Habs are up 2-1 in their Round 2 series against the Sabres. Game 4 returns to Montreal on Tuesday, with the puck dropping at 6 p.m. ET.
