It was a historic moment in pioneer radio when St. Lawrence University President Richard E. Sykes took to the air at 7:15 pm on December 24, 1922 to broadcast a Christmas Eve greeting for the first “official broadcast” of WCAD, the college’s new radio station.
“As this is the only broadcasting station in what Irving Bacheller christened the North Country, this program will probably prove of especial interest to everyone,” The Watertown Times predicted of the new station, which would become known as “The Voice of the North Country.”
College officials saw radio as a public relations tool to build connections with surrounding communities and to keep in contact with alumni.
