The New York Rangers have recalled top prospect Gabe Perreault and forward Brennan Othmann in an attempt to jump start their offensive woes. To make roster space for both kids, the Rangers have returned forwards Jaroslav Chmelar and Brett Berard to Hartford. Perreault and Othmann are the two best offensive prospects in Hartford at the moment, and while Berard and Chmelar have been fine, the Rangers need scoring.
The initial reaction to the Rangers reassigning Berard to make room for Perreault and Othmann is going to be negative, but there was no other choice with all the injuries. The Rangers were at 23 skaters already, which is the NHL max. To recall both Perreault and Othmann, two players had to be returned to Hartford immediately. Chmelar and Berard were the only two forwards that could be returned without waivers, which results in a 24 hour delay.
This is Perreault’s 2nd recall and Othmann’s 3rd recall. Perreault looked fine in his first recall, but strength was a clear area to work on. Othmann hasn’t faired well in the NHL, not even getting a game in his second recall. But he’s found his scoring touch in Hartford this month, so hopefully that translates to the NHL.
