The world listened on February 9, 1958, as ABC news commentator and conservative talk radio pioneer Paul Harvey broadcast from the studios of WNBZ radio in Saranac Lake. “During the years you and I have covered millions of miles,” he said. “Tonight, I am in upper New York State. I am in Saranac Lake where I have been king for a day.”
Shortly after the broadcast, Harvey caught the evening train out of Saranac Lake, capping off a blizzard of a week in which he skied down Mount Pisgah, rode a bob sled with a world champion, visited the Teen Canteen, chatted with Paul Smith’s College students, and reigned as King of the 60th Annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, broadcasting from the WNBZ studios each day.
