ONE Fight Night 38: “I threw up everything”

Diogo Reis won the ONE flyweight submission grappling world title while fighting more than just his opponent.

The 23-year-old Brazilian claimed the vacant crown with a unanimous decision victory over Daiki Yonekura at ONE Fight Night 38, which took place inside Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium.

During a post-fight interview with Nick Atkin days after his second successive promotional triumph on Dec. 5, ‘Baby Shark’ revealed the health crisis he endured just hours before stepping into the ring.

“You know what happened? In the morning, I had my breakfast, and then I threw up everything, and I was like, ‘What?’ Okay, because I have gastritis. I said ‘Okay, no problem.’ I think it’s bad because I will be fasting, and I’m going to just drink water and water,” the Melqui Galvao product shared.

He continued:

“But during the fight, I was good. Five minutes until five minutes. And after the five minutes to the end, my blood pressure went down, bro. And I started going down, going down, going down. But also, when you feel your body start to become heavy, you move, it starts to go slow. And when the match ended, I couldn’t stand. I was almost dying.”

Diogo Reis says some moments from his fight vs. Yonekura “scared” him

While he looked in the driver’s seat throughout his single-round 10-minute battle against Yonekura, Diogo Reis admitted that everything didn’t look as comfortable as it appeared to be.

In the same interview, ‘Baby Shark’ said that Yonekura’s attempts to hook onto his legs from guard left him fearing for the worst.

“Yonekura started getting to my legs, and I was scared of him getting the catch. I can’t let him get the catch, you know,” the 23-year-old added.

“It’s a really dangerous position. [But] he could not do it. But after that, you know, [I got] so much headache. My body doesn’t want to do anything.”
