Unrivaled co-founder and WNBA star Breanna Stewart held up an “Abolish ICE” sign before Mist BC’s game on Sunday. Stewart is one of several athletes who have protested the killing of a second person in Minneapolis at the hands of federal immigration officers.
In an Instagram post, Stewart explained why she decided to speak up after another American citizen was killed in Minneapolis in a span of a month. She is married to a Spanish citizen, Marta Xargay Casademont, so what is happening right now hits close to home.
“As a mother, nothing scares me more than seeing families torn apart, children traumatized, and parents living in fear of losing their loved ones,” Stewart wrote. “Our communities deserve better. They deserve safety, dignity, and compassion. Not trauma and division. Saying Abolish ICE is about advocating for policies that uplift families and strengthen communities, instead of fueling fear and violence.”
Breanna Stewart’s post received plenty of love, reaction and support from her fellow WNBA and Unrivaled players. Stewart further reiterated in an interview with ESPN that her protest to abolish ICE is a call to change how the federal government handles immigration issues.
“Really all day yesterday, I was just disgusted from everything that you see on Instagram and in the news,” Stewart said. “We’re so fueled by hate right now instead of love, so I wanted to have a simple message of ‘Abolish ICE,’ which means having policies to uplift families and communities instead of fueling fear and violence.”
The situation has turned from bad to worse in Minneapolis after the second death of an American citizen in a span of less than a month. The nation remains divided on the issue, with the NBA recently postponing a game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors for safety reasons.
Who is Breanna Stewart’s wife?
One of the reasons why Breanna Stewart feels for many immigrants in the United States is that her wife, Marta Xargay Casademont, isn’t an American citizen. Casademont was born and raised in Spain, but she’s working on becoming an official American citizen.
The couple has been together since before the pandemic and got married in July 2021. They have two children, a daughter named Ruby Mae and a son named Theo Josep.
Casademont is a former pro player, but she retired back in 2020. She played the majority of her career in Europe, but she suited up for the Phoenix Mercury for two seasons from 2015 to 2016.
