Kevin Stefanski doesn’t mince words on removing Shedeur Sanders to run Wildcat play on crucial 2-point attempt vs. Titans

After Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski shared his thoughts on removing Shedeur Sanders to try a Wildcat play in order to clinch the win. However, Quinshon Judkins failed to flip the ball to WR Gage Larvadain, resulting in the Titans holding onto a 31-29 lead to seal the win.

In the postgame press conference, Kevin Stefanski shared his honest thoughts behind benching Shedeur Sanders for a two-point conversion attempt.

“Not gonna get in all specifics, but obviously, did not go as we thought it would,” Stefanski said. “Yeah, I make every call. Again, it’s a two point play, didn’t come through in our first two point play, got to the second two point play, we didn’t come through. But that’s on me. I’m responsible for all (play-calling).”

Shedeur Sanders had a better performance on Sunday following last week’s disappointing 26-8 home loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Against the Titans, the rookie quarterback completed 23 of 42 passes for 364 yards, four total touchdowns, and an interception.

However, it was not enough to help the Browns to victory. Stefanski and his team are placed dead last in the AFC North with a 3-10 record and a two-game losing streak.

This season has been turmoil for Kevin Stefanski in the quarterback room. He had a disappointing start to the season under veteran Joe Flacco. After a 1-3 start, he was benched for rookie Dillon Gabriel, who has just one win as the starting quarterback of the team.

Gabriel suffered a concussion during their 23-16 loss to the Ravens, which led to Shedeur Sanders replacing him in the second half. So far in four appearances, he has tallied 769 yards and five TDs passing.

Shedeur Sanders shares his honest thoughts on being benched during crucial two-point conversion play

In the postgame press conference, Shedeur Sanders was asked to share his thoughts on Kevin Stefanski’s decision to bench him for that fourth-quarter two-point conversion attempt.

The Browns rookie said that while he wishes the ball to be with him during every offensive play, he understands that is not how the game works on the field.

“If I’m out there any play, I would always (wish) to have the ball in my hand,” Shedeur said. “But that’s not what football is. Sometimes, you got to run the ball, sometimes you got to kick the field goal. You know, like that’s the game, the most important thing is the ball. So, in any situation, of course you want. But I know we practiced something and we executed in practice, and we just didn’t seem to execute it today. So I would never go against what the call was or anything.”

The Browns are next scheduled to face the Chicago Bears on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
