Bill Belichick has been making headlines after being snubbed as a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer. This has left fans frustrated and angered, questioning the selection committee on why the ex-New England Patriots coach was not a first-ballot entrant.
On Wednesday’s episode of the “Pat McAfee Show,” retired three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt also backed Bill Belichick in this situation. He believes that this snub helps create some positive PR for the coach after all the drama he’s been involved in since leaving the Patriots.
Thanks for the submission!
“It’s hands down the best PR he could have right now at a time where, obviously, it hasn’t been the greatest PR for him the last year or two here with everything that’s going on,” Watt said. “Have you ever seen Twitter come together about anything?

“It’s been incredible to watch this reaction because it’s such a no-brainer. It’s just stupid.”

ESPN reported that Bill Belichick failed to get the 40 out of 50 votes required to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. As the coach of the Patriots, he led them to six Super Bowls over 24 seasons. He put up a 266-121 record before mutually agreeing to part ways in 2024.
In December 2024, Belichick transitioned to the collegiate level and was named as the coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. However, despite high expectations, his debut campaign ended with a 4-8 record. Apart from this, he was also embroiled in off-field drama because of his relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson.
Bill Belichick has been heavily criticized throughout 2025 for his romance with Hudson. Back in November, the New York Post reported that his daughter-in-law, Jen, confronted the UNC coach inside his office. She allegedly went on a rant about Jordon Hudson and her negative impact while giving Belichick the ultimatum to choose between her and his family.
Tom Brady questions Bill Belichick’s Hall of Fame snub
During Bill Belichick’s regime, the Patriots drafted Tom Brady with the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL draft. The duo went on to establish the franchise as a dynasty and created a legacy for themselves.
During an interview with “Seattle Sports 710-AM,” Brady expressed his displeasure with Belichick’s Hall of Fame snub.
“I don’t understand it,” Brady said. “If he’s not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, there’s really no coach that should ever be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, which is completely ridiculous, ’cause people deserve it. He’s incredible.
“He’s gonna get into the Hall of Fame, and I’m not worried about that. A lot of times in life for all of us, things don’t happen how we want them in our timeline, but we’ll be there to celebrate him when it does happen.”
Brady is not the only one to criticize the selection committee for Belichick’s Hall of Fame snub. Even four-time NBA champion LeBron James weighed in on the matter, calling it a “disrespectful” move after everything the coach achieved in the NFL.
