Would deep-fried, breaded onion rings work just as well? “The Family Doctor says: When much pressed with work and feeling an inability to sleep, eat two or three onions, the effect of which is magical in producing the desired response,” the Ticonderoga Sentinel reported on Nov. 21, 1895. “Such a remedy has a great advantage over the stupefying drugs commonly resorted to for this purpose.”
Here’s another use for onions. “Half a dozen onions planted in the cellar where they can get a little light will do much toward absorbing and correcting the atmospheric impurities that are so apt to lurk in such places,” – Ticonderoga Sentinel, March 28, 1879.
