Mountain Bike Trail Upgrades at Wheelerville Trails, Fulton County

In 2024, the Town of Caroga in Fulton County, NY, was awarded $99,700 through DEC’s Community Smart Growth Grant Program to build and upgrade trails at Wheelerville Trails, the town’s mountain biking area.

This project is expected to add beginner and intermediate level trails to the area, extending biking opportunities to families and recreational trail users as well as more experienced riders.

Funded by the Environmental Protection Fund, the Community Smart Growth Grant Program supports projects that build on planning and economic development activities by municipalities and not-for-profit organizations in the Adirondack and Catskill Parks.

The 2024 Community Smart Growth Grant award will help the Town of Caroga build on four years of trail construction at Wheelerville Trails. Through this grant, the town has already completed 4.5 miles of trail work, including constructing a beginner trail on the lower mountain and re-treading two additional trails.

This year, the Caroga plans to continue trail work by resurfacing their Forever Wild trail and surveying the land to begin planning for a potential new intermediate trail.

It’s hoped these additions and improvements will increase recreational opportunities for the mountain bike community in the area and benefit local communities.
