TRANSCRIPT: I’m Alyson Hommel and I’m an assistant professor in the Neurology Department.
My clinical specialties include neuromuscular medicine with special interest in the pediatric muscle disease population- so that includes things like Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth, any of the acquired inflammatory neuropathies- as well as some of the generalized neuropathies as well.
One of the reasons I became a neurologist was just an early on love for neuroscience. I was introduced in undergrad and haven’t left it since. It’s always a changing science- there’s new developments every day and I think it’s very exciting how close we are to finally curing us of so many of these neurological diseases that have plagued us for so long.
One of the main reasons I joined faculty here was because there was a need to expand our pediatric Muscular Dystrophy Clinic which is run in part with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We have a very strong adult clinic and a smaller pediatric clinic. In the years to come, we’re hoping to expand it and also bring in lots of critical research that our patients will now be able to participate in.
