Rambam's Birthday Party


75 years ago today, marks the inauguration of the government hospital which would later become Rambam Health Care Campus.

Last Thursday evening, December 19, an impressive event was held to celebrate this great day in Israel’s history. Friends of Rambam including, Health Minister — MK Yael German, Mayor of Haifa — Yona Yahav and other friends and family of Rambam attended, in honor of the largest hospital in northern Israel. A great time was had by all.

The event began with a heartwarming twist. Health Minister MK Yael German took to the stage and announced that the government had decided to transfer to Rambam 40 million shekels for completing construction of the Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital (the largest facility of its kind in the world), due to be completed in the coming months. Her announcement was met with loud applause.

Eitan Wertheimer, a longtime friend of Rambam who was instrumental in the developing and promotion of Rambam vision for the future, also made a momentous announcement from the stage—a donation from the famed billionaire Warren Buffett of $10 million dollars.

Prof. Rafi Beyar, Director of Rambam, updated everyone as to the status and vision for the new West Campus development project, including the soon to open underground parking lot for the benefit of visitors and patients (the peacetime configuration of the Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital), the new Ruth Rappaport Children’s Hospital, the Joseph Fishman Oncology Center, a Cardiovascular Hospital, and a new Biomedical Discovery Tower.

Prof. Yehuda Hayuth, President of Israel Friends of the Rambam concluded the greetings and thanked all those who helped to produce the event, including Secretary of the Association, Judith Asnin, Rambam ‘s Marketing Department and the production company—THINK Events.

After the greetings, the audience watched a powerful and emotional film about Shaked Bernstein, a brave young girl who overcame cancer. The tearful audience was honored to meet the Shaked of today—a healthy and beautiful soldier serving in the Israel Defense Forces. She received a standing ovation.

A skit was presented by the comedian Yuval Semo, and had the audience wiping away tears of laughter.

The finale of the evening came from the extremely talented singer and songwriter, Yehuda Poliker. He and his band performed some of his greatest hits, much to the delight of all his fans.
